Do I have a Thing about this?

January 12, 2010

I gotta share something with you that’s helping me a be a lot more sane.

For regular readers, you might remember parts of it.

Here’s how it works for me (I’m going to write this as instructions, but I’m not sure if it’s gonna work for anyone else):

~ You feel something, erm, stressful (anxiety, anger, embarrassment… one of the closing emotions).

~ Go wide, putting your attention on the periphery (for me, I actually put my attention on the edges of my etheric energy, my chi, but if that’s a bit or a lot woo-woo for you, think about the edges of your peripheral vision.)

This allows some space and starts an intention towards opening.

~ Ask ‘What can I physically see, what can I physically hear right now?’

I understand some people find it good to go, ‘What can I physically feel right now?’ Hands and feet are good, evidently (for me, that takes me inside a bit too much and the point is to put your attention on the outside for a second).

~ Notice what else is going on

At this point, anything else is a thought or a feeling.

If it makes sense, move your consciousness two inches towards that feeling. (Push towards the kitten that’s biting you). Open, just a little.

Here’s the kicker:

~ Ask yourself,  ‘Do I have a Thing about this?’

You know, is it a Thing?

Are you hyper-sensitive to being in trouble, to being seen as hapless, to taking responsibility for everyone having a good time?

(For example. Ahem.)

Because if you have, it may be that what you’re feeling doesn’t mean anything,  it’s just an old alarm being triggered.

**

You then might want to see if you can trace back what just triggered this (something you thought, read, heard someone say..?)

And then ask, ‘So… is this real or this is this just one of my Things being triggered?’

Oh, and, ‘Do I need to act on this, or just give it space to subside?’

***

This process works so well for me that I caught myself doing it a minute ago, and, even though I’m on a day off, thought I couldn’t wait a day longer to tell you guys.

I know.

Dedication.

If anyone says anything about an inability to take a day off, you can go to the back of the class and just… be quiet.

***

So, I really am interested.

Can you give that a go and see how well it works for you or if you need to tweak it?

Cos if it does work, I’ll start teaching it to people.

Yay, teaching.

If you liked this, you might like some of these too...

  1. Go wide
  2. Why you need to work on your (emotional) stuff
  3. My experience of opening

I have a Thing about being told what to do. It’s kind of an alternating “you’re not the boss of me” Thing and an “I don’t need to be fixed” Thing.

Absolutely going to try your technique. Thanks.
