The four pillars of a peaceful resolution

January 11, 2012

So, you want to handle conflict and crisis better?

As far as I see it, the four pillars of dealing with high-stakes situations are:

1. Emotional fluency
2. Deliberate uncertainty
3. Conscious listening
4. Conscious speaking

The first two are ones that help you stay steady and open.

The last two are what you ‘do’.

Although you can begin to access these skills in simple ways, they really develop through long-term attention.

All four together mark someone who has made a resolution to be peaceful, who wants to move beyond unnecessary conflict and remain helpful in a crisis.
